It’s that time of the year when we find out how long we’ll now be waiting for gender equality.
In 2020, we were told it was 95.5 years away.
Then in 2022 (following the pandemic) it was 132 years.
As of the World Economic Forum's 2026 report released on Wednesday, we’ll now be waiting 120 years. The year 2146 is set to be a big one! Here’s more on the global picture, and the best and worst country performers.
Finally, Melissa Marsden’s mum was her closest support, her housemate of seven years and, in the government’s language, an “informal support”. Since she died, Melissa has been working out what the NDIS expects her family to absorb. She shares this piece.

The ranking that Australia has achieved for gender equality in the World Economic Forum’s 2026 Global Gender Gap Report. This is our highest ever ranking, and Minister for Women Katy Gallagher attributes this to Government investment, “From closing the gender pay gap and lifting wages in female-dominated industries to expanding Paid Parental Leave and investing in women’s health, we are delivering practical changes that make a difference in women’s lives.”

The New South Wales parliament has rejected the Abortion Law Reform (Sex Selection Prohibition) Bill 2025
This decision reflects previous bills that recognise abortion as healthcare, and reflects a woman’s right to have an abortion, as well as protecting healthcare workers that provide this service. Family Planning CEO Sue Shilbury said in a media release “Criminalising any aspect of abortion care is an attack on women’s health…this bill was a familiar strategy from the anti-abortion playbook attempting to chip away at women’s reproductive rights.”
